Tamil Nadu State Counseling Procedures

Directorate of Medical Education (DME), Tamil Nadu, is the governing body for conducting the counseling process within Tamil Nadu. Within the state, 15% of All India Quota counseling is conducted by Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), whereas the rest 85% is conducted by the state governing body DME. After the declaration of NEET score, the governing body conducts the counseling for the eligible students.

The State Quota seats include the seats in the Government Medical Colleges and Government Quota seats in Self Financing Private Medical College including the seats surrendered to Government by Rajah Muthiah Medical and Dental College, Annamalai University, Chidambaram and also for seats in Management Quota in Self Financing Private Medical/Dental colleges inclusive of NRI quota.

There are around 4550 MBBS seats and 1940 BDS seats in the state of Tamil Nadu. The counseling is conducted in the medical colleges on the basis of the scores secured in NEET UG examination.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Only the citizens of India or Person of Indian Origin are eligible for the counseling procedure.
  • Candidates must be a native (domicile) of Tamil Nadu.
  • Candidates who have completed Class 8 & 12 in Tamil Nadu do not have to submit the nativity certificate.
  • Candidates who have completed Class 8 & 12 partially or completed from outside Tamil Nadu, must submit a nativity certificate along with photocopy of birth certificate, or ration card or passport.
  • 17 years is the minimum age of the candidates to take the admission in the medical colleges in Tamil Nadu.
  • Candidates who are below 25 years of age (30 years for reserved category) as on the date of NEET exam will be considered for admission.

Apart from this the candidates should pass class 12 examinations with Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology and English from a recognized board of education. To be eligible for the examination, the unreserved category candidate must secure 50% marks while that of PH category and unreserved category candidates must have secured 45%. And 40% for reserved category including PH reserved. Candidates who are already pursuing MBBS/BDS course are not eligible to apply for MBBS/BDS course. Candidates should also secure the minimum qualifying percentile in the NEET UG Exam as per the qualifying criteria mentioned in the table below.

Application Form

The candidates who want to get into MBBS and BDS courses from government and private colleges in Tamil Nadu need to fill the NEET counseling form Tamil Nadu. You need to fill the counseling application form on the official website of the Directorate of Medical Education.

Step 1: Visit the official Karnataka Examination Authority website www.tnhealth.tn.gov.in

Step 2: Then go to the login or register page.

Step 3: If you register for the first time, you need to go to “Candidate Registration.” While completing the registration, you need to enter your NEET roll number, rank, date of birth, and mobile number. Once you have successfully registered, then you will receive a registration number and a security pin.

Step 4: If you have already registered, you need to do “candidate login.” You must enter your NEET 2021 roll number, the generated registration number, and the security PIN.

Step 5: Once you have logged in, you must enter your academic details like class 10 marks, 12 marks, NEET 2021 marks and ranks, your address for verification.

Step 6: After filling in all the details, go to “Save and Pay” and proceed to NEET 2021 counseling application fees payment.

Step 7: Make the payment by choosing your choice of online payment from the options mentioned on the screen.

Step 8: The filled application form will come on the screen. You need to download and save it for future use.

NEET Merit List: Tamil Nadu

Secretary, Selection Committee, DME will publish the merit list of the qualified candidates. The candidates who will register online for the counseling process are the only eligible one for 85% state quota counseling. The state quota merit list will be available online it also includes the candidate’s name, father’s name, category, NEET roll number, NEET marks and State merit rank.

Steps to download NEET merit list 

  • The candidates have to visit the official website of DME to check their names in the merit list for admission to the Government quota and Management Quota (including NRI) seats.
  • The updated merit list will be shown to the candidates after entering name or NEET roll number.
  • The State Rank as derived from NEET scores is also mentioned in the merit list.
  • The candidate has to take a print out of the merit list

After the merit list is being declared, the candidates whose name has successfully declared are then called in for the counseling process. DME publishes the allotment result in online platform of its official website.

Tie breaking criteria

There are many students who appear for the counseling with similar marks. The counseling authority follows different parameters for tie breaking purpose: 

  • The candidates who have higher marks in Biology (Botany & Zoology) in NEET entrance exam will get preference.
  • If a tie exists till then candidates who have higher marks in Chemistry will get preference
  • If the above two mechanisms do not work then candidates with lesser number of wrong answers will be given higher order in the merit list.
  • The candidates with older age will get preference as a final resolve 

Process of NEET counseling in Tamil Nadu

Online Application Form: The interested candidates have to fill up the application form, to take part in the counseling process to be conducted on the basis of candidate’s names in the merit list. The application forms will be released by DME on its official websites and will be put in government colleges also. Candidates will have to pay for the applications in the form of Demand Draft worth INR 500/- drawn in favour of ‘Secretary, Selection Committee, Chennai-10’. The forms have to be filled up accordingly and send to the Secretary, Selection committee, DME along with relevant documents. 

Merit List declaration: The list of the eligible candidates selected for the first round of counseling including names of candidates who had already applied for participating in the counseling process, will be displayed online in the official website of DME.

Release of Counseling Schedule: DME will release the counseling schedule containing the dates and ranks of candidates called for the counseling.

Downloading of Rank Letter:  Candidate, who have qualified NEET and acquired a rank in the merit list must thereafter download the counseling call from DME. This letter will contain the merit ranks and can be downloaded from official link forwarded by DME. This call letter must be carried at the designated counseling centres and allotted colleges for verification purposes.

Special Category Counseling: At first, candidates of special category including Ex-servicemen, Eminent Sports Persons and Orthopedically Physically Disabled will be called for counseling. It should be noted that candidates selected under this category at this time are not re-allotted the seats under any circumstances.

First and Second Counselling Rounds:  As per the rank declared in the counseling schedule the candidates are required to appear in the counseling process. Candidates have to attend the session as per the date, time and merit tanks mentioned in the counseling schedule. They have to carry their rank letters and original certificates for counseling. As a processing fee, candidates are required to produce a demand draft of INR 500/- drawn in favour of ‘Secretary, Selection Committee, Chennai- 10’ at the time of counseling. Besides, candidates must bring along with them a second DD towards payment of tuition fee as per their respective categories. The category wise fee will be mentioned in the counseling schedule. For admission in any medical colleges in Tamil Nadu only if they fulfill the eligibility criteria as prescribed by DME.

Cancellation and Fee Refund:

If a candidate does not join the college, then he/she have to forfeit the amount paid during counseling, and the allotted seat will be automatically cancelled. The selected candidates and their parents/guardians have to sign an agreement bond for college admission. The bond is for the reason that if a candidate discontinues the course after admission, then will be liable to pay a specified sum as a penalty. If they discontinue in the beginning of the month, they will have to pay INR 1, 00,000 and if they discontinue the course after second month, they are liable to pay INR 10, 00,000 penalties. Failure to sign the agreement bond will lead to complete admission cancellation.
